If done the right way I dont see how it could be a problem. For one, the user has to explicitly add the 3rd party product, apple could also act as a intermediary or something, the update will only become available through software update once apple has tested it (can download it youself when released), and even though the update comes from the 3rd parties webserver the hash is stored on apples servers and the update HAS to be verified and compared to the hash.

    edit: spelling

Thats the thing. I cant see Apple going through all that for little or no benefit for themselves.

List of things I don't want to hear one word about at the WWDC:

    iPod
    iPod nano
    iTMS
    iMac
    Mac mini
    MacBook.

The WWDC is now and always should be a professionally focussed conference. All technical, nerdy and Pro stuff - Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, Pro Apps, OS X development.

All the other stuff can be updated in their own little events or quietly on the online store on or around the WWDC if needs be but the actual event should be totally professional stuff. That's why the developers pay the big bucks.

LOL If only it were that easy.

I bought the MBP because suspiciously my PB G4 decided to die on me right around that time and I, of course, rationalized and used it as an excuse with myaself... and now I kick myself in the butt for it too because 1 week after I bought my MBP, Apple released the 17" MBP for the same price I paid for my 15".**kick*Well, you could have returned it for a 10% restocking fee up to 10 days after purchase and bought the 17" then. Did you not know that?

Sorry if someone else has mentioned this already, but I also expect Apple to announce (if not release) a new version of Logic, either at MWSF or at NAMM, which starts about a week later.

The latter is more likely, since its a music industry event, but one way or another, Logic is due for an upgrade. Seriously!

Perhaps not of interest to everyone, but important for the musicians here...

    Guaranteed, or almost guaranteed:
    iWork 07
    iLife 07
    iTV

    Very likely:
A new feature or two in Leopard, possibly with a release month
A new Jam Pack or 2
    More iPod games

    Likely:
Speed bump to one or more Mac lines
    Demo of Photoshop CS 3
Update to some pro software app (but not all)

    Less likely:
Discontinuation of Appleworks (only if iWork '07 includes a spreadsheet)
    release date for Leopard
Major upgrade to Mac mini (video card upgrade) or MacBook Pro
    New Displays
    iPhone
    Touch-screen video iPod

    Unlikely:
    New iMac form factor
Major upgrade to any line other than mini or MBP
New consumer software other than a spreadsheet addition to iWork
Upgrade to Logic, Filemaker, Shake, or Aperture
    Immediate release of Leopard
New iPod form factor (iPod Micro, for example)
    802.11n

    "Yeah, no.":
    New Pro App
    New iPod Hi-Fi
xMac or any other new Mac line
Any new Apple peripherals (ie printer, scanner, camera, speakers.)
PCI(e) slots in anything but the Mac Pro :(
    Apple switches back to PPC.
    New kernel in Leopard

    There, did I miss anything?

Just a quick question: how to make a full, clean installation of Lion preview 2 starting from the app downloaded from Appstore?
Do you have to restore it as dmg on a external drive to boot from or is there any other way?

    Thanks guys!

Is there really a big market for a 23" iMac @ 2000? I hope this rumor is bogus. I'd much rather see Apple come out with a headless Gaming mid-tower with a Core 2 Duo Extreme and X1600 card. Dual HD bays and one optical bay. AP/BT built in. 3 PCIe slots (one used by X1600). I think that would would fill a gap Apple has in their consumer line-up right now.

A Headless Conroe would be awesome. Easily expandable and fast. But, will Apple do it? Pigs may fly. The Mac Pro is great, but most people simply can't afford one and don't need 4 processors.

Come on Apple, bridge the gap!

The Griffin hardshell will come apart without damage, it is just VERY  snuggly fit together.

I got a fingernail into the seam, then some steady force pulling the lower section straight back did the trick. It's a nice case with a beautiful fit.

I did not opt for a screen protector, no second thoughts. I've found these often get pretty mucked up themselves on other devices, and that by itself would be a shortcoming on this amazing display.

For a lot of traveling, maybe an inexpensive slip case? Best luck.

    Thanks, Eolian.

I think I'll just go with the case for a while and see how it goes. If the front starts to take a beating, I can always use the Invisishield then. So far, I'm really liking this case.

All I need to know is if AJA will be supporting it.

If the answer is yes, then the whiny pros in this thread can shut up and get used to the new interfaceits still just as pro as before.

SUPER excited about this. Cant wait to see the rest of the suite. Im doing a ton of hardware upgrades at my office now (new edit suites). Wish I could wait until the new FCS was out, but for now Ill just eagerly await the day I can unleash all 12 cores of my incoming Mac Pros on some video game trailers. :D

One thing that's been frustrating me since DP1 is that when you minimize a window into its app icon it's sort of in limbo. Mission Control won't show it, nor does app expose (at least in some apps). Swipe-up on the dock icon (is this app-expose?) does sometimes, but it's mingled with recent files. Add that to the indicator lights being gone and I could have an open app with 20 minimized windows and totally forget about it.

It's not a huge deal, I suppose, but it makes the window management seem broken. I'd hate to go back to using the old-style minimize to the right side of the dock. I never liked that because it mixed those windows with stacks and got messy, plus it stretched and shrank my already-full dock.

Anyway, anyone else bugged by this? Am i missing something? Expose is the single most important thing to me in OS X; I rely on it to greatly speed my workflow. I like mission Control but this needs to be addressed. And, yes I filed a bug report for each DP release on this.

touch screen is usefull for mobile devices because you don't have any place to put a screen, mouse and keyboard. But desktops you have room for keyboard and mic so i don't see this happening in imacs.

Steve said a D8, he believes that there will always be a place for desktops but a majority of our tasks will be done from tablets or mobile devices that are touch screen enabled.

And there are just some things that require keyboard and mice! steve acknowledges that and so does the rest of the world.

knowing Apple they may put a $1,999 price on it at intro, since they know there will be a mad rush of faithful. Then after a month or two when sales settle, drop the price to $1,899 for the holiday season. Both those prices could be $100 lower, depending on what the base config offers.

Cheapest Two x 1GB sticks kit is $331 from Omni via this Ramseeker.com link (http://www.ramseeker.com/scripts/counter.php?http://www.omnitechnologies.biz/cgi-bin/catalog/cp-app.cgi?usr=51F714335&rnd=3227630&rrc=N&affl=B&cip=&act=&aff=&pg=prod&ref=APLMP2X1GB667O&cat=applem).

That to me spells crossover time since for only +$3 you only fill two slots instead of 4 for the same 4GB of RAM.

Cheapest Two x 2GB sticks kit is $665 at 18004memory via this Ramseeker kit (http://www.ramseeker.com/scripts/counter.php?http://www.18004memory.com/ramseeker/default.asp?itemid=502459).

I would recommend that you are 100% sure the RAM you get is thermally certified for the Mac Pro.

13" screen means you can only shave about a pound off the Macbook's current weight - so a 4lb, not 3lb. notebook.

If the above is true, then I guess this is not a macbook lite, but a macbook pro lite, so I'd expect starting price of $1999.
